Shimmering Stars second LP, Bedrooms of the Nation, explores themes of social breakdown, anomie, dislocation, & how people aspire to find meaning in a culture of violent individualism. The record draws from sociology of the early industrial era, which explored the breakdown of community and the implications of an increasingly mechanized and individualized society. Although the record is often disarmingly bleak, it leaves room for optimism, particularly in closing number “I Found Love.” The album is best characterized as ‘damaged’ or ‘fractured’ pop. Classic pop structures are subverted and washed out in reverb, feedback, white noise, and abrasive soundscapes. While classic pop touchstones remain, ‘Bedrooms of the Nation’ integrates elements from across the pop, noise, punk, and experimental spectrums: The Pixies, Flipper, Yo La Tengo, Women, and Nirvana run head-on into ‘Pet Sounds’, Phil Spector, and 50s/60s AM radio. Bedrooms of the Nation was recorded by the band at the Garage Mahal in Kamloops, BC, Canada, between 2011-2013. It was mixed by legendary Vancouver engineer Colin Stewart (A.C. Newman, Black Mountain) at The Hive studios.

Bedrooms of the Nation, the second full-length album from Vancouver’s Shimmering Stars, was recorded by the band at the Garage Mahal in Kamloops, mixed by legendary Vancouver engineer Colin Stewart, and mastered by Dan Emery at Black Matter Mastering in Nashville, TN. Lying at the intersection of timeless pop, experimental soundscapes and punk sensibilities, Bedrooms of the Nation will be released digitally on August 13th in Canada and will be released on Almost Musique in Europe.

Exploring themes of social breakdown, anomie, dislocation, and the aspiration to find meaning in a culture of violent individualism; the album can be at times disarmingly bleak, but leaves room for optimism, particularly in closing number “I Found Love.”

Since the release of their first full length album, Violent Hearts in 2011, the band has received rave reviews from the likes of MOJO, NME and Pitchfork. Their debut led them to France, Belgium and England, as well as SXSW and a number of other Canadian festivals. Leading up to the new album, Shimmering Stars also released a split single, “His Clancyness via Splendour” and the “Ghosts Past” EP via Almost Musique.

Shimmering Stars we be touring Canada this summer. Stay tuned for details!

Shadow Visions is the first single off Shimmering Stars’ second LP ‘Bedrooms of the Nation’ (due for release spring 2014).

Recorded in fits and spurts throughout 2011-2013 at the Garage Mahal in Kamloops, BC, ‘Bedrooms of the Nation’ is currently being mixed by Vancouver producer Colin Stewart. Shadow Visions is representative of the sonic and stylistic shift of the record. Here there are only hints of Phil & Don Everly and Del Shannon, while Frank Black, Kurt Cobain, and Flipper loom large. It’s a noisy, visceral record, but in the vein of In Utero or Nevermind, it retains a fundamental pop sensibility where melody is paramount.

January 2013

This fall I was living in Vancouver, where I was unemployed and very poor.  A high school teaching job came up 1500km north of the city and I couldn’t turn it down. For the past 4 months I’ve been living in a remote town in northern British Columbia called Dawson Creek. Leaving behind family, friends, relationships, and the band was difficult, and the isolation of life in a small northern town has been a constant challenge. But I am surviving, and I’ve had so many wonderful experiences up here, especially with all the fantastic young people I’ve had the pleasure of teaching. My contract ends in late January, and I’ll be back south by early February, which means that Shimmering Stars is about to enter a period of feverish activity.

Our plan is to finish recording our second full length in the spring, and then do some shows and tours in the summer. I personally feel a renewed sense of excitement in making music and sharing it with those who care to listen. We’re also really excited to welcome Elisha Rembold to the band. She is incredibly talented (check out her band Lost Lovers Brigade) and it’s an honour to have her in the band. Thanks for your support!
